A former demolition worker dies merely weeks after winning an asbestos lawsuit against his former employers.
John Manniex, 77, was a former employee of Mee and Cocker (Leigh) Limited. His jobs included demolishing prefabricated houses in order to reclaim aluminium used in construction. He contracted mesothelioma after being exposed to debris from asbestos during the demolishing projects in the 1960s.
Before his death, Manniex contends that his employers did not attempt to meet any precautions to protect the workers against asbestos. He explains that “Mee & Cocker were merely concerned with the aluminium roofs on the houses.”
However, the company denies that the prefabricated houses were infested with asbestos.
The company’s lawyers further claim that asbestos was not used in aluminium prefabricated housing.
During the trial, one of the company’s former directors, Stanley Mee, admitted to not knowing what types of materials, including asbestos, were in the buildings that were scheduled to be removed and that there were no precautions taken to make sure asbestos was not present.
After a 12-month long case, the information that was brought to light by Stanley Mee led to the company’s lawyers to offer to settle the claim.
